Car, bike registration procedure gets stricter

MUMBAI: In the wake of terror threats posed by "car" and "motorcycle" bombs, the RTO is following stringent measures while registering new cars and two-wheelers in Mumbai.

There will be two to three levels of checks at the time of application, followed by verification of addresses by the postal department during delivery of RC books.

A senior transport department official said, "The RTO has done away with the previous system of applicants filing court affidavits as a proof of residence. We are now demanding copies of passport, voter-ID card, etc. Besides, our officials have the discretion of asking for two to three proofs of residence and unless he ascertains that the applicant is a bonafide resident of Mumbai, the car registration will not be accepted," he stated.

Not really! Apparently, after the Anna Hazare movement everyone seems to be scared to do anything out of the norms and more so taking bribes. For eg: Car registrations used to happen at any RTO you wanted irrespective of the residential address you provide. Now most dealerships are refusing to register a car in a different RTO. Not sure how long this will last though.

Coming to RTO registrations, things still seem to be the same in Karnataka. I just gave the same forms we gave for the Swift.

Grrrr.... I am still struggling to get my Jeep registered in my name even after paying the bribe amount, changing the color and making numerous trips to the RTO. 1 last try after removing the snorkel and alloys will be made on Monday. Hope I succeed....
