ODO Meter tampering and car service history

I have heard that it is easy to tamper with car ODO meters, and that it is practically impossible to find a car which does not have a tampered ODO meter from an Indian second hand car dealer.

From what I have seen, it is also almost impossible to find a car with the service history and service books intact from dealers here. Probably the service books disappear when the mileage is reduced.

Since it seems to be such a prevalent practice in India, I thought it would be a good idea if we could figure out how it is done, and who does it? What equipment do they use to tamper a digital car ODO meter?

Also, the only way I know of getting service histories of cars is to ask "friends" at Authorized service centers to take a sneak peek at the car's service history. Other than this, are there any "official" ways to get to a car's service history in India?

Ps. For some time I was also playing with the idea of attempting a service like CARFAX® Vehicle History Reports&#84 ... ber lookup in India. How useful will such a service be in India?

A service like that will be very useful, but how are you going to set a system that is not corrupt? people will always find someone to falsify records for a significant fee

Can electronic odos be tampered with by our garden variety criminal?

Tadu, isnt there a company in Mumbai that sends a mechanic to check the car and give an evaluation? IMO, you should do that service along with some kinda Carfax thingy. Carfax alone wont cut it.

As for the usefulness of such a service, I remember HVk being turned down for an extended warranty deal after the dealers saw his detailed logs. ;-) I dont think anyone bothers with things like these.

When i sold my car ,i had the complete log right from day one in a file along with bills .I even had the Excel file some automations done ,but it was supposedly useless for the garage guy who uses it now.

About tampered odo's,i remember reading somewhere that we could make out if the odo has been fiddled with if the speedometer needle "dances " instead of moving up/down smoothly. Also ,the article did mention about the odo numbers not aligned correctly after the tamper. But most modern cars have a digital odo

Carfax kind of service will only work if all the service stations get connected to a common database or tie with a similar service provider where the vehicle records get updated.

Satya, the dancing happens if you have a faulty worm in your gearbox.

One can tamper with digital odo's as well. Just that you need some electronic gadgets with some software to do that. Just google, resetting digital ods and see the fun .

@ Tadu: Yes, I don't believe the readings shown on the dash while buying a car from any dealer. Which is the main reason, why parents don't ever agree to buy a used car.

As far as the "official" way goes, you can walk into the showroom and ask them to show the cars service history. Worked for me at MASS each time. Recently, Biju's friend wanted to buy a M800, we went to RNS and when I figured there was something shady about the car, I asked the SA to show me the service history on their computers and he gladly obliged.

As far as the tools concerned, I think the equipment is similar to the OBD scanner. You can re-calibrate/reset everything on the odo.

      From what I have read

      - Digital ODOMeter's can be revised with eprom programmer and software like TACHOSOFT ( TachoSoft Mileage Calculator - odometer ... roll back)
      - Read the Dash eprom or mcu and dump it to a file, edit with hex editor, change data in locations mentioned by TACHOSOFT for your car model and write it back.

      - Needle dance need not be because of odometer reset, it could be anything from worn speedo worm to not fixed properly after service.

Thanks!!. I knew someone who was with True Value Used Cars ,and i was shocked to see that everything gets tampered. He even mentioned about how they used to sell the used cars with punctured tubes with make shift arrangements .
For me ,the safest way to buy a used car is to buy one from a owner you personally know.Used car dealers are a strict no for me.

The speedo tampering can be seen in any vehicle.Just ride the vehicle littl bit fast on some rough road and the speedo just dances or vibrates. Then catch the baldy by the collar and ask him

Shishir, do read the posts below. The speedo dancing is not because of a tampered speedo, but because of a faulty worm which can be easily replaced.

I agree to what you told Mclaren, but my point is, the cars in 2nd hand shops shows as 25k kms but it would have run 75k kms. now the smart dealer will never take a chance of telling a buyer that the worm is worn out so it is dancing. He would have changed it. BUt my point, the car of 8-9 years old and just finished 25-30k kms is suspicious. All vehciles will be in the range of 30k kms in 2nd hand dealers yard. So it is a point to think for
