MiniDSP : Cheaper and Efficient Alternative. Viable?

MiniDSP has already been discussed by several ICEheads on the forum. It appears as to be a promising & a cheaper alternative DSP to be used for integrating OE Source Units and Carputers. I have been on the lookout and considering it for an another future project.

      Some Insight :

The basic MiniDSP is a MiniDSP unbalanced kit, has 2 in and 4 out configuration.
This kit has two versions :
      Rev A = 0.9V input
      Rev B = 2.0V Input
This processor is a standalone board with the ability for multiple options of DSP.The board and the software plug-in has to be ordered separately. The software is called a “plug-in”. They offer a wide range of various plug-ins varying form a simple 2.1 stereo w/sub setup to a 4-way P-EQ plugin which allows you to have 6 channels of parametric eq per input (2) and output (4). The plug-in software is like a platform and is regularly updated with new advancements and breakthroughs. This is seriously cool as some of the plug-ins compete with the features of High-End DSPs.
Another important and smart feature of MinDSP is that the hardware can be expanded and added with various add-ons. link

      These hardware add-ons include :
      1. Another MiniDSP Kit : For further extending the output channels.
      2. MiniDIGI : allows digital audio input - output connectivity on miniDSP platforms. link
      3. MiniAMP : digital amplifier module designed for low power, high efficiency, stereo or multi-channel applications. link

      The Plug-ins include :
      1. Stereo two way crossovers
      2. Mono 3 or 4 way crossovers
      3. Plug-ins for the miniDSP 2x8 or 8x8 platforms link

      Standard Features :
      1. Time Alignment in 0.02ms increments
      2. Phase Flip (0/180)
      3. Channel muting
      4. Linkwitz-Riley with slopes of 12, 24, and 48dB/octave slopes
      5. Butterworth with 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, and 48dB/octave crossovers
      6. Bessel crossover (fixed slope)
      7. Individual channel input/output gains with attenuation of up to -70dB
      8. Bypass: You can bypass the crossovers, or EQ to compare the changes you've made to what it sounds like without those changes
      9. Levels of Equalizer is ±16dB
      10. Equalizer Types can be standard (Peak) or High or Low shelf.

      Other Versions :

      1. MiniDSP Balanced Kit. (For High level inputs) Not sure if the output is low level.
      2. MiniDSP in Box (same kit but in an enclosure)
      3. MiniDSP 2 In 8 Out
      4. MiniDSP 8 In 8 Out

      Applications:
      - Passive/Active Crossovers
      - Digital Crossover
      - Scope of 31 band of graphic eq + 6 bands of parametric eq.
      - Time Alignment. link

      Pros:

      1. Cost : 100$ for unbalanced kit + 10$ for a single Plug-in. Extremely VFM.
      2. Verastile and Flexible : Scope of options is endless. One can have 31 bands of graphic eq + 6 bands of parametric eq.
      3. Consistent development and free updates on a particular purchased Plug-in. Able to compete with most updated High-end DSPs.
      4. Extensive Support & Service provided by the manufacturer. They even have a forum.

      Cons:
      1. Its a kit though nothing has to be soldered and integrated, but its much of a DIY.
      2. Problems related to Plug-in Synchronisation with multiple boards. (As per certain threads in forum).
      3. PC tuning part might be tricky for noobs.
      4. Looks and build very Raw(no-enclosure just the board). However, the MiniDSP in Box version has the same board in an aluminium enclosure.
      - Uncertainity of High level Speaker Inputs and Low Level RCA outputs present in the same kit. ICE Gurus?

I've put up this product under discussion is because this DSP seems to be a promising option or even alternative of several DSPs available in the market today ranging from 250$ to as high as 700$. Can the MiniDSP with adequate add-ons keep up with the performance of High-End DSPs?
How a noob can be benefited with it? The costs vis-a-vis with the features is tempting! What say ICEheads?

Are they for main stream computers or for automobile applications?

They are intended to use with Automotive applications - Basically its a stripped down version of a DSP offering great customization options.

However nothing stops you from using with your Computers at home too

Hmmm...interesting if one knew how to work with these boards and knew how to customize the DSPs we could have a custom board for every car.

Well, working with these is not much complicated. Only grouse is that they can only be tuned with the help of PC.
Once tuned desirably, they don't require further to be connected. Its something like tune and forget.

One can also use it with Home Audio Setups. There are also hardware add-ons like miniDIGI to add Optical and SPDIF input and output to the existing Processor Board and other versions like Balanced miniDSP for high level input, 8in 8 out version etc.

The 2 in 4 out only costs 100$. The 2 in 8 out costs around 299$ and the 8 in 8 out costs nearly 399$. Plus 20$ for plug-ins. It seems to be a VFM for even the 8-in-8 out version provided you know to change the settings. Everything is graphical with lots of variables in the software. It takes some time to get used to the playing with software part.

I actually did a very thorough research on this before going in for the imprint kit. But there were lot of issues discussed in lot of forums and the output of the Minidsp is also just 2V. So decided to go against it.

Yes its a good alternative for DIY people and also for people who wanna save money.

The older versions have some issues. The newer 2X8 and 8X8 have inbuilt noise filter so Noise issue is gone. The pre-in Voltage is 0.9V to 2V and not Pre-out. Pre-out may vary and there maybe a need to purchase a line driver,Pr_007: not very sure about this. if you are not comfortable jacking up the gains of your amplifer otherwise we can also purchase a Noise isolator from MiniDSp for any kind of noise issues

One thing i love about them is Plugins, it gives any and every customization and tuning possible moreover you buy the plugins at a one time cost and rest all updates and everything is free.

The usage is very promising for OEM where we can get out put from one pair of RCA and multiply in a 2 way front stage by MiniDSP 2X4 and then use another 2X4 for Sub.

So 2 MiniDsp2X4 can get you 3 way + Sub. the quality of Components used is very high they have TI/Burrbrown DAC's as well along with high Quality ADC's

The only limit is you can use one pair of RCA's for in MiniDSP 2X4 for input.

The better way is to buy 8X8 for 4 way active 8inputs and 8 outputs
