Tata motors recalls 145,000 nanos for replacing starter motor!

Last week, Toyota recalled nearly 41,000 Etios sedans and Liva hatchbacks to replace faulty fuel filler pipes and today TML issues a recall. As a part of a preventive recall, Tata Motors is recalling 145,000 units of the first generation Nano hatchback, to replace the starter motor. There have been many issues of starter motors failing on the early Nanos with a high incidence of Tata Motors replacing the units under warranty. Now, this issue has been sorted out with a new starter motor in the 2012 version of the Nano. The new starter motor will be installed in the older version of the Nano, 145,000 units of which have been sold in India ever since the budget small car was launched in 2010.

This recall is applicable to every Tata Nano except the new 2012 models. So, if you drive a Tata Nano that isn’t the 2012 variant, you need to contact your nearest Tata dealer or Tata authorized service center to get your starter motor replaced. This replacement will be free of cost and the Nano owners need not pay a single rupee for the replacement. Also, this recall has nothing to do with the cases of a few Nanos catching fire.

Nevertheless, Tata Motors recalling the first generation Nanos to replace the starter motor is a positive move from the automaker, as this would greatly increase the reliability of the first gen Nano, a model that was prone to starter motor failure. This is the second recall the Indian car industry has seen in under a week.

Well, we need to appreciate TML for coming forward and accepting their defect and issuing a recall for a low cost car which sells with a wafer-thin margin. I bet no other manufacturer will bother to replace a defective part in an low cost model. But TML could have done this much earlier rather than waiting for 1L+ car sales.

There are companies like MSIL, Skoda, VW and Ford who doesn't bothered to fix their manufacturing defect take India customers for ride!!!

future targets for tata motors is markets like Rome & Italy, where the market is already flooded with supermini's.. This would be the rightful cheapest competitor..
