Retaining your old car/bike registration numbers for your new purchase

Is it possible to retain the registration number of the car in Karnataka while you sell the car? And can the same number used for a new vehicle?

It *might* be possible. I have seen it in another state where the RTO was requested to oblige since the person in question was recognized by various security staff / police by the vehicle number. Best bet is to inquire at an RTO.

Well you cannot retain the number but if you pay some extra money and ask for the same number you will definitely get it.

Duh?... in a different series you mean!??

As far as I know, the laws do not permit retention of the same number across different vehicles. .

I know a family of 3 brothers who use the same number for all their cars. I don't know how.

Same number yes.. not the SERIES...

as in you cannot have three vehicles running with KA-01A-1234 for instance

      You can however have

      KA-01A-1234
      KA-01B-1234
      KA-01AB-1234 etc....

Multiple vehicles running the same number is the favorite trick of the interstate volvo guys! The permits are damn expensive and the ones to Kerala needed THREE permits.. Kerala, Karnataka and TN. To circumvent this they would ply multiple vehicles with the same number. They got caught .. and were in big trouble.

Isn't there a provision for transferring the number from one vehicle to another, if the owner is same?

I guess Sachin Tendulkar retained the registration number of Ferrari. I need to find out with the RTO then.

Punjab, Haryana and Maharashtra have apparently started this practice - albeit implemented differently. Some allow only vanity numbers to be retained (numbers bought by paying more money at the time of registration), while some allow if for all numbers. Fees also vary. (can go as high as 100,000!)

Now, retain your old 'lucky' number for new vehicle - Times Of India

According this older article, the Ministry of Road Transport has sent a circular to all States allowing such retentions. However the decision to implement (along with the modality and fees) has been left to the state. Karnataka apparently is amongst the states that has not taken a decision in this regard. (of course - they are too busy mining!)

Vehicle owners can retain their vanity numbers

Apparently the Transport dept of AP Govt had proposed it - whether its gotten disposed......
