      Mi10 turns Diesel Head - Need help in choosing the right car EDIT: I am now a VERITO MAN!!

      Hello there,

      Rising cost of Fuel, and my increased run abouts, has pushed me to look for a Diesel Car, A Hatch by the way.

      Current list;
      • 2012 Fiat Punto MJD (75 bhp)
      • Ford Figo TDCi
      • Swift DDIS
      • I20 CRDI

      Looking at top end models only. The On Road Price are as following;
      • Punto Emotion - 7.84
      • Figo Titanium - 6.89
      • Swift ZDI - 7.87
      • I20 Asta - 8.23

      Cars that were not considered
      • Polo TDI - Didnt choose as its 3 pot
      • Fabia TDI - same as above
      • Micra DCi - Didnt like it
      • Tata Vista - Boot is way too small
      • Ritz VDI - Didnt like it
      • Beat TCDI - Rear Seats are just too small + kinda Quirky design
      • Liva GD - Dint like it

      Requirements;
      • Good handling Car
      • Reasonable Mileage
      • Good A.S.S
      • Low Cost of Ownership
      • Not too picky about Power, ok with Reasonable power
      • Decent looks
      • Good Boot space

      Test Drove all of the Above, i am confused becasue of the following reasons;
      • Punto - Love the handling, dynamics, everything except the suspect A.S.S
      • Figo - Another car with excellent dynamics, and steering f/b, but low GC is my issue here, as current state of roads near my place is very bad
      • Swift - nothing majorly wrong with it, except the waiting period, 3 months for ZDI
      • I20 - Super power delivery and excellent set of features, but handling was not great and the steering very vague, plus the priciest of the lot
      GH pls help me choose a car with your valuable inputs

      From the list you've shortlisted........

      Good Handling - Rule the i20 out. The best handler is the Figo, followed by the Swift and then the Punto.

      Mileage - Figo scores anyday. Followed by Swift, i20, Punto.

      Good A.S.S - Can't go wrong with Hyundai or MSIL. Not sure how Ford service in Chennai is or FIAT with all the confusion going on about the split from TATA.

      Low Cost of Ownership - Figo, Swift, i20, Punto in that order.

      Power - Figo feels the most underpowered of the lot. FTD is ruled by Swift, Punto, I20 in that order given they have slightly more powerful engines. Figo still handles the best and by a huge margin, and if you are on narrow roads, ghats, it tops the FTD chart. On a GQ, I find it a tad too underpowered.

      Looks - Subjective! So no comments.

      Boot Space - Dayum! None actually...

      BUT, if you want to ICE the hell out of the car, the i20 it has to be.

      Looks its not only me Many are in the same dilemma!!

      You missed out Renault Pulse, have a look at it and do a TD.

      My vote goes to Punto

      mclaren1885 - Punto is praised for its handling skills and you are saying Swift and Figo are better!!

      So Punto OR Figo.

      Choice is yours.
      Just to add - GC is not an issue with Figo if driven carefully.

      I don't think you will get an answer. The reason being, you have listed down all +ve and -ve aspect of each TD'ed car and the cars which you don't like. Apart from this what extra can be told is a big question

      I doubt this. Swift should come on top of Figo here.

      Praised by WHO? Most people who talk about handling have no idea what they are going on about! Punto is a good handler, but Figo scores 1st in hatchbacks today. Swift follows suit because of the way the engine is tuned, which makes cornering fun. Punto though being a good handler, FTD factor is robbed because of crappy ECU tuning. Handling is FUN when you can build speeds into a corner and keep up those speeds. Punto lacks in that department.

      Here is more proof of what I'm trying to say.

      The Rs 10 lakh track test - Overdrive

      Ripper would be in a better position to comment. IMO it's just the mud flaps that scrape. But NOTHING can beat the chassis of the Figo and that wonderful steering feedback. I'd buy the car alone for that. If only the Figo came with the 1.6S petrol engine, it would have been the perfect track car, enthusiasts car under 10L.

      Power delivery ain't that great honestly, they have mellowed it down from the first few versions. Handling sucks big time, one of the worst cars I've driven. Steering is again the worst in hatchbacks I've driven.

      If power isn't the primary concern, I'd pick the Figo. Again, the other reason I don't think Figo is the right choice for Praveen is the same driver placement issues as the Fiesta when he ICEs the car.

      I've driven the "fastest" Figo in the country! And that to me was underpowered. So

      Are you sure you are able to get this within 3 months? My friend recently booked the New Swift Dzire and he was told it will take a minimum of 6 months at least. He is trying to get it in 3 months by using some short cut methods

      My vote goes to the New Swift. The only drawbacks that I could see in that are the following

      a) Claustrophobic rear, lack of leg space in the rear.
      b) Insufficient boot space.

      If the above are not a major hindrance for you then surely the Swift ticks all other boxes.

      There is a method to overcome the above two drawbacks. Go for the New Dzire. Because of the dual tone beige interiors and a bigger rear window, the Dzire will not feel as claustrophobic as the Swift and there is a boot as well.
