gas charged dampers for the OHC :D

I meant to mention this a while back but never got around to it. so it went like this: a few months ago when I had been to Bangalore I visited Shello on JC Road and was fooling around when uncle told me that a company called TRW - who is also an OE supplier to major European brands - was making dampers for the OHC. I checked them out and imagine my surprise when I found out that they were gas charged! I put one side by side with an OE Munjal Showa fluid charged damper and pressed down on both pistons simultaneously. the Munjal Showa resisted a bit for the first few mm and then sunk like a stone in water and stayed sunken. the TRW started going down after some considerable force and was resisting all the way to the bottom. when I took my hand away, the piston began to rise back immediately almost like the damper had a built in spring.

      now for some history:
      1. I was running OE dampers. the car was a sofa on wheels.
      2. when Raj and RD did their so called rebuild, my suspension was also modified [dampers revalved] for 7.5K or so. irrespective of how Raj ****ed up my build, I have to admit the suspension was pretty good.
      3. after I crashed and destroyed the front RHS damper, got all four changed to ones "specially modified" by RD Sanjay. those were shit. the only time they worked was when I was carrying two gearboxes in the boot. otherwise each corner had a mind of its own.
      4. went back to stock dampers and Eibach springs. those were only lower and not stiffer. was also running 15" wheels back then. so those would constantly keep scraping the arches when the car bounced.
      5. got some experimental dampers made at Johnsons place where Opel Astra gas charged units were cut and welded to fit my car. with the low Eibach springs, the car was super low and stiff and there was barely any room for the piston to travel. on plain roads she would ride like a dream. and change lanes at 140 kmph with ZERO body roll, almost like an F1 car. but the slightest bad road or speed hump would cause the suspension to keep bottoming out.
      6. got the stock dampers stiffened near Johnsons place and stock springs cut one coil to lower the whole thing slightly. it was okay until one damper leaked and failed.
      7. Johnson then told me that the Munjal Showas were pieces of shit - especially the ones at the rear - and suggested Gabriel OE replacement dampers [fluid charged] for 1800 bucks a pop. I tried them on and those were WAY better than the old ones. absolutely loved them.

so I was happy until I saw these TRWs. a quick price check put each at 1800 bucks - the same as the Gabriels, only gas charged. I liked the gas charged experience with the Opel struts before so these were very tempting because they required no hack jobs to install and would give me good ride height too. at that time I made a mental note and filed it away.

this time when I went to Mysore I decided to stop waiting for the Gabriels to pack up and go or these while the car was waiting on the engine to get rebuilt. so I had them dumped in a bus to Mysore and had them installed.

I only have one word to describe them: brilliant! being used to the old dampers, the ride on bad roads now feels like a magic carpet! I can obviously feel the car bob up and down but barely any of the teeth rattling shock is transmitted inside. at the same time, handling has also improved. I can happily take sweeping corners and change lanes at speeds greater than 120 kmph. while going back home from Mysore, I was traveling with a full trunk and rear seat [almost equal to two extra passengers]. the height barely reduced. with the old dampers my wheel arches would almost have been kissing the wheels. the comfort handling was also quite good on some particularly shitty roads. all I wanted to do was to get rid of all the ballast and then have a crack at it.

so as soon as I arrived, I threw out all the dead weight and tried again. people who have been to Rajahmundry must be familiar with the rail-road bridge that connects East and West Godavari. every ""repair" carried out on that thing only makes it worse. nowadays that thing is a 4 km long rumble strip. if you go fast, every component in your car will be rattled loose in one sitting and if you go slow it feels like you are riding on horseback. perfect to test these new babies.

like I said before, this time it felt like a magic carpet ride with barely any shock being transmitted inside. I couldnt be happier.

finally there is a reliable replacement that will improve both comfort and handling for the OHC and do some justice to those sweet engines without burning a hole in one's pocket.

bottom line: if any of you good OHC people are contemplating replacing their struts, ask for TRW. there is also another brand called KYB [made by Kayaba, Japan] but they are a tad more expensive but build and looks wise, identical to TRW. for 7500 bucks, which is the same or maybe even slightly cheaper than a set of Munjal Showas, this is probably the best suspension related investment you can make.

Nice! Glad to know finally you have something available for the OHC that improves the handling to make use of that power that engine develops.

there is a little body roll but not boat like. and it feels like the body stiffens up progressively. *way* better than stock struts.

7.5 for a set of 4 and a straight fit.

like I said on the other thread, the guy is having problems sourcing a set. Ill let you know when he gets back to me. in the meanwhile, you could tey asking in Chennai. Im sure somebody should have them there. dont say "gas charged". just say TRW / KYB.

I got rid of my old number. the new one is on Facebook.

      Please do.

I've been asking around be no one seems to know any options for OHC.
However I've been told there might be options similar to hotbits but cheaper. I'm waiting for an update on that.

In the meantime can you please ask the dude to try and get another set.

      EDIT :

the new one is on Facebook.
Nothing shows up. If there was my hi-tech android phone would have figured it out
I did check manually nothing is showing up
