THE FORD DIARIES : The New Ford Fiesta 1.5 Tdci Titanium+

On 8th March, 2012, my Fiesta 1.5 Tdci Titanium+ completed 6 months on the road, and I felt a review was due.

My new Ford Fiesta car has been braving the Delhi roads for the last 6 months, having run 8055 Kms. on Diesel worth INR 11600.

Lately, one gets to see some more new Fiestas on the roads, although this one does not seem to be as popular as its preceding sibling, the previous generation Fiesta. Or is it the proverbial dark horse that will creep up from the back? only time will tell.

THE THIRD FORD IN A PERIOD OF 8 YEARS

No. I am not am employee of the Ford Motor Company, neither do they pay me to write good reviews on their vehicles. But this is indeed the third Ford I have owned in a period spanning 8 years.

I was quite happy with the ownership experience of the previous generation diesel Fiesta (now Classic), which I had owned since April 2006 and had run it for close to 80000 Kms. By early 2011, the decision to look for its replacement had been taken. I had been closely following the developments on the entry of new Fiesta in the Indian markets. After exploring a couple of options, I decided to reconsider the Fiesta in April, 2011, soon after its launch announcement at Delhi.

Having test driven a couple of vehicles of various makes and after having given most car manufacturers a fair chance, I seemed to be lured by the blue oval yet again. The Classic Fiesta’s turbo rush and responsive engine could give many a newly launched cars a run for their money. But then, I had always had a weakness for Ford vehicles. Here’s why :

      - The very first 2 logos I saw on vehicles as a kid were Ford and Fiat. The Ford car at home back then was a very old one owned by my paternal grandfather dating back to the late 1920s.

      - Whenever I visited our family farmland, I always saw a Ford Tractor tilling the fields. I held great fascination for the bright blue coloured tractor and all the noise it made.

      - In the 1990s, the Ford logo appeared in India on the Ford Escort and I used to look for excuses to drive through the road in front of the Ford showroom. I just could not afford to purchase a new car back then

      - Lured by the Blue Oval I managed to purchase the Ford Ikon 1.6 ZXi petrol in January 2003

      - Found an excuse in mounting fuel bills to purchase the 1.4 ZXi diesel Fiesta when office shifted to a more distant location

So, even though I had set forth with a fairly handsome budget upwards of 18 lacs, I still ended up being lured by the New Fiesta. Clearly a matter of heart over head

      BOOKING THE NEW FIESTA SEDAN

By late April 2011, I had made up my mind to buy the new Fiesta Sedan, in spite of the fact that .

      • I had yet to see the car in flesh, leave alone taking a test drive
      • I had no clue about the actual pricing
      • There was no data released from the company about the variants and the final specs per variant
      • No one had a clue when the car would actually be available for delivery

      HIGHER PRICING & LOWER BHP

By mid July 2011, the Fiesta had been formally launched but wait, what was this? Something looked very wrong

      - the expected killer pricing turned out to be killing pricing with all intention of killing the New Fiesta Sedan even before it hit the showrooms

      - The expected 1.6 diesel and petrol mills had been shockingly downgraded to 1.5 ones instead

      - the showroom staff were clueless on when the car would be available for delivery and how to manage their existing customers who had already booked the cars

I took a test drive of the car and found the overall package to be quite acceptable. On insistence of family and friends, I also took a test drive of the New Hyundai Verna. But I still stuck to my decision to buy the Fiesta.

During this time, all that Harpreet Ford could do was give one date after the other for the delivery of the car till I ran out of patience and called up the Plant at Chennai. I could still not extract a firm delivery date. Sometimes, I was told the car had already been dispatched, at other times I was told there was a delay in procurement of the parts for the Titanium+ variant.

Wow, this would imply a mileage of close to 30 kmpl. Here I am with another Ford that gives 9.5 kmpl. Can someone confirm the math with Delhi diesel prices?

Looking forward to the rest of your Ford love story, Sugeeta. My next buy will definitely be a Ford as well though I'll be skipping the new Fiesta. I don't like its looks.

Delhi normal Diesel prices are around 45INR.
      11600/45 = 257.8 L
      8055/ 257.8 = 31.4 L !!

Nah, it's way too fast and nimble to be even caught, let alone killed.

I know Ford diesels are fuel efficient, but 31 kmp is

Since there were Q's on the FE figures, I added up all the Bills and yes, indeed, the sum total is INR 11679.40 over the last 6 months, since I maintained a log I have the details with me. I have discounted the last Rs 79.50 as the DTE still depicted 53 Kms.

No particular driving tips here, but yes, our cars are well maintained. Cruising at neutral gear, though not recommended as a good driving habit, yeilds good fuel average on slopes and big flyovers. The FE figures have improved over time, and there was a very noticeable change after the 1st service. Clutch is not used indiscriminately. Sounds bookish, but indeed, this car is tuned for FE.

Mustang.101, what are the FE figures across other Fiestas?

BTW, the previous Diesel Fiesta was providing a FE of approx. 24 Kmpl over a 6 month period.
