Porcelain White TATA Indigo eCS LX

Car 1: FIAT Uno Petrol (1997-2002) - White
Car 2: Maruti Suzuki Alto VXi 1.1 (2002-2009) - Ruby Red

It has always been hatchbacks for us until now...
Enter 2011 and we got a new Porcelain white TATA Indigo eCS eLX Diesel.
The VX version was launched some months after our car was bought. The launch of the VX version puts my car in the mid variant trim.

Initial impressions: The car has buttloads of space. I am 6'1" and there is space for an adult to sit comfortably in the rear seat behind me when I am driving.
Looks kind of cute (I prefer mean). The paint quality is superb and the finish is very nice. The color white was chosen as the swirl marks and fine scratches aren't as clearly visible as they are on any darker shade (I am lazy that way)

Now come the positives and negatives.

      Positives:
      1. Lots of space inside (as mentioned earlier)
      2. Very good fuel efficiency
      3. Decent Engine performance
      4. Drive-Assist is very useful.
      5. Powerful aircon

      Negatives:
      1. Crazy body roll
      2. Shitty fit and finish inside and outside.
      3. Stock Goodyear GPS2 Tyres make a lot of noise.
      4. Steering and pedal angles are horribly wrong
      5. Crappy ICE. Shitty speakers and somewhat decent HU (lacks USB though)

The drive assist feature is basically the car accelerating a little by itself to prevent from stalling when the Gear-RPM relation goes wrong.
The mileage alone is enough to bring a smile to the owner's face though.
There is noticeable turbo lag and one needs to keep the engine above 1800 RPM in order to have fun
The suspension is soft and absorbs the road shocks with an SUV like ease. I drove the eCS and then the swift back to back and there is a very vast difference in the road shocks and vibrations in both the cars. But then the softer suspension leads to body roll which is scary at higher speeds.
The power steering is hydraulic, requires some effort to turn and isn't as light as any EPS system.

      Coming to the interiors,
The seats have adequate cushioning and the covers that come stock look decent. I however wanted atleast art leather for the looks and ease of cleaning.
The fibre panels are not put together nicely and have gaps. There is a faux wood panel on the centre console which looks nice.
The placement of the power window switches is wrong and one has to lean forward to press them.
The speedometer console looks very nice with the chrome rings and the white backlight. The RPM meter is the fastest(in terms of needle response) I've ever seen. The backlight brightness is adjustable

When the headlights are turned ON, all the little lights in the dashboard switches light up with a nice white glow. Looks much better than the yellowish glow the alto had.
The headlights are perfect on this car. Beam throw for the high beam is awesome and so is the beam spread for the low beam.

The moment I listened to the speakers, I knew I had to upgrade.
So got JVC 2way in dash, Pioneer door speakers, JBL GTO Limited edition 6x9s, Soundstream LittleWonderIII LW4.500 amp and a Powerbass L124D subwoofer in a Sanen Acoustics Ported Teakwood Box. Then came in the HU change. Needed a USB port badly, got the Pioneer DEH-4250SD

Got the floor laminated to protect from stink causing fungus/mold, ART leather seat covers, V-Kool window and windsheild tints, IND numberplates, muffler tip

The ART leather seat covers. I've been asked by people so many times whether they came in as stock. The installer did a very nice work.

The faux wood panel. Notice the idiotically placed power-window switches in the bottom of the photo?

I do not understand what you mean by gear rpm ratio going bad? You mean too low rpm in a higher gear would engage the drive assist?
Could you explain the working a lil' more please

revhard_trb12 - Thanks for the review. The eCS is a car which I'm very much interested in. Hope you carry this forward and give a long term ownership report.

if this is a TDI, then would strongly suggest using System D. If its a CR4, my advance sympathies
nfspoet, it essentially prevents your car from stalling, especially while trying the half clutch maneuver.

It is a CR4. I don't know what System D is, can you explain a bit? Also, why the sympathies?

You should take a nice Highway test drive before you decide. The 2 points where TATA messed up are the noise filtering and the handling.

Don't the art-leather seats get too warm/sticky during the summers?

Why do you say so? My understanding is that CR4 engine is the same as that of the DiCOR engine that TATA had on certain Indigo XL's. I am not sure about the actual differences between the CR4 and the DiCOR that was Indigo XL but both are Common Rail. All eV2's and eCS's now come only with CR4 engine and we don't get TDI's now-a-days. TATA offer only a single engine option as far as I know.

Good choice of colour. The Indigo CS is a really good car, and it's fantastic value for money. My last car was Tata Indigo LX (TDI). It was used for over 4 Years and did over 1.3 Lac KM without any isues

eCS is powered by an all-new Common Rail CR4 engine. There were lot of issues with old DiCOR engine. However, IIRC, production of thatengine was stopped around 2009.

System D is an additive highly recommended for the older indica engines,

Yes the CR4 is better and improved, but the jury is still out on its reliability. have heard some not so nice reviews from cabbies, but they generally don't take proper care (follow proper idling etc) I guess you should be in a position to tell us after 3 years or so . One immediate consequence is that the CR4 needs better filtration, and the filter is expensive ( 2~3k as opposed to 200 for the TDi) and clogs up faster, and if it gets clogged, the engine starts to act up - Jerking etc (in the TDi it just gets a bit more sluggish)
